Why translating shop is harder than blog

A blog post is one piece of text. A product page is a dozen, coming from a dozen different places - and a shop that is 90% translated still looks broken at the checkout.

A duplicated catalogue

Duplicate every product per language and 500 products become 1,500. Stock, SKU, price and sales reports then have to be kept in sync across copies - and one missed sync oversells an item.

The last 10% of the text

The product is translated, but the attribute heading, the shipping label or a badge from the theme settings stays English. Each of those lives in a different layer, and finding out which one is normally guesswork.

The bill per word

A catalogue is a lot of words, and word-metered services price accordingly. Here the multilingual engine is free, and if you later want AI translation you pay the AI provider directly for tokens.

Everything on a WooCommerce page, covered

Eight layers make up a translated shop. All eight are in the free edition.

Products

Title, description, short description and excerpt, translated in the native Gutenberg editor. The original product is never duplicated - the translation is an overlay served under the language URL.

Variations

A variable product carries its translation on the parent, and each variation inherits it - so "Sweater - Small" reads correctly in the cart, in the order and in the confirmation email, without translating every combination by hand.

Attributes and their terms

Both halves, which most setups get half right: the attribute label ("Size") and the terms under it ("Small", "Medium", "Large"). No more Polish options sitting under an English heading.

Product categories and tags

Names, slugs and descriptions per language, including attribute taxonomies that WooCommerce registers as non-public and other plugins therefore never offer you.

Cart, checkout and My Account

The block-based screens read their labels from JavaScript translation files rather than from the .mo. Saving a string rebuilds those files too, so your wording - not WooCommerce's default - is what the customer sees.

Buttons and interface strings

"Add to cart", "Proceed to checkout", shipping and tax labels: a built-in .po/.mo editor covers every string in WooCommerce, your theme and your other plugins.

Text stored in options

Badges, promo bars, free-shipping notices and other labels a theme keeps in its own settings rather than in code. No language pack can reach them; LATW reads them from wpml-config.xml or you add the option key yourself.

Elementor shop layouts

Product templates, archive templates and Elementor Pro Theme Builder layouts translate in a dedicated shadow editor, with Elementor's rendered-element cache scoped per language so a page is never replayed in the wrong one.

One product, every language

Instead of copying a product for each language, LATW keeps a single canonical product and swaps the translated values in when a visitor opens the language URL.

The usual way a copy per language

#45 DE
sync stock
#46 FR

#47 ES

4 products to keep in step

Four rows for one sweater

Every language gets its own product with its own ID, meta and revisions. Reports split across copies, stock has to be mirrored, and removing the plugin leaves the duplicates behind.

One product, four languages

The translation lives in LATW’s own tables and is swapped in when the language URL is requested. Inventory, orders and reporting never split, and uninstalling leaves your catalogue exactly as it was.

New Translation Inspector

Click the English word. Get the answer.

On a shop, one stubborn label can come from WooCommerce itself, from a product, from an attribute, from a widget or from your theme’s settings. Guessing which one costs more time than the translation does.

Switch the inspector on in the admin bar, open the shop and click the text. LATW names the layer it came from - with the chain it sits inside - and links straight to the screen that translates it. Administrators only; a customer’s page load is untouched.

A bilingual shop in four steps

01

Install and add your languages

Prefix, locale, label and flag. There is no limit and no license key - the shop is already routing /de/ and /fr/ URLs.

02

Download the language packs

One button pulls the ready-made WooCommerce, Elementor and theme translations from WordPress.org, so the interface is in the right language before you type a word.

03

Translate your catalogue

Products in the native editor, categories and attributes in their own tabs, builder layouts in the shadow editor. The originals are never touched.

04

Sweep with the inspector

Walk the shop, cart and checkout in the new language and click anything still in English. The inspector tells you where it lives, and you fix it in a second.

Free covers the whole shop

Nothing on this page is a paid feature. Pro exists for shops that would rather not translate 500 products by hand.

WooCommerce multilingual FAQ

Can't find what you're looking for? Reach out to support directly.

Is this WooCommerce multilingual plugin really free?+

Yes. The free edition translates products, variations, attributes, categories, the cart and the checkout, with unlimited languages, no license key and no API key. Pro adds automatic AI translation on your own OpenAI key, but nothing in the list above is locked behind it.

Do I need WPML, WooCommerce Multilingual or Polylang?+

No. LATW Multilingual is standalone: switcher, language URLs, SEO tags and translation are all in the one plugin, and there is no separate WooCommerce add-on to buy or configure.

Does it duplicate every product for every language?+

No. A translation is an overlay on the original product, so 500 products stay 500 products - not 1,500 across three languages. Stock, SKU, price and order history live on one product, so nothing has to be kept in sync.

Will it slow my shop down?+

No. There are no duplicated posts and no extra product queries, and routing is native WordPress. A shop that scores 100 in Google PageSpeed before LATW still scores 100 after - in every language.

Are prices and currencies translated too?+

LATW handles language, not currency. Prices stay exactly where WooCommerce keeps them, so any multi-currency plugin you already use keeps working alongside it.

WooCommerce ships no .pot file - how do I translate its buttons?+

WooCommerce and Elementor publish their translations on WordPress.org instead of shipping a template with the plugin. One button on the Themes & Plugins screen downloads every pack available for your languages, and from there each string is editable like any other.

One label on my shop is still in English. How do I find it?+

Turn on the translation inspector in the admin bar and click the label. It tells you which layer produced it - a WooCommerce string, a product, a term, a theme option - and links to the screen that translates it.

Will my product URLs be SEO-friendly in each language?+

Yes. Each language has a clean prefix (/de/, /fr/) on native WordPress routing, and hreflang, x-default, self-canonical tags and sitemap annotations are generated automatically, so each language version can rank in its own market.
